ABSTRACT:

A study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding gratification habit among parents in selected village of Mahesana district. The research approach used was evaluative approach; design used was pre- experimental one group pre test post test design and non probability purposive sampling technique was used for sample selection. The samples were selected from the selected village of Mahesana district. The samples consisted of 30 Parents who fulfilled criteria set by the investigator. A structured questionnaire was prepared to assess knowledge of samples regarding gratification habit. Result relevant that Paired t-test was used to test the effectiveness of health teaching on knowledge. Average pretest knowledge score was 6.6 which increased to 14.4 in posttest. T-value for this comparison was 19.4 with 59 degrees of freedom. Corresponding p-value was 0.000 which is small (less than 0.05), the null hypothesis is rejected. This indicates that the knowledge of parents regarding gratification habit significantly improved after health teaching.

INTRODUCTION:

Gratification is the pleasurable emotional reaction of happiness in response to a fulfillment of a desire or goal.1 Gratification, like all emotions, is a motivator of behavior and thus plays a role in the entire range of human social systems.2 Instant gratification is the desire to experience pleasure or fulfillment without delay or deferment.3 Basically, it's when you want it; and you want it now. Instant gratifications are the opposite of what we’ve been taught and try too hard to practice–delayed gratification.4

The habit disorders include many tension reducing activities that appear during childhood at various levels of development.5 Some of these habits are learned from adults as children initiate their behaviors.6 Others develop as a purposeful movement that becomes repetitive as the original purpose is forgotten. But they have a tendency to inhibit these habits but they may reappear at times of stress.7 During preschool period the children most commonly develops the some habit disorders like thumb sucking, nail biting, tics and enuresis etc.8

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

“A study to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding gratification habit among parents in selected village of mahesana district.”

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY:

·       To assess the knowledge regarding gratification habit among parents.

·       To evaluate the effectiveness of the structured teaching programme among parents.

·       To find out the association between knowledge and their selected demographic variable.

RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS:

H0: There will be no significant difference in health teaching on knowledge of parents regarding gratification habit.

METHODOLOGY:

Research Approach:

The research approach adopted for present study is quantitive research approach, aimed to know the effectiveness of health teaching on knowledge regarding gratification habit among parents in selected village of Mahesana district and determining its effectiveness statistically.

Research Design:

In the present study the investigator selected Pre- experimental one group pre test post test design.

The diagrammatic representation of this design is as follows:

O1 X O2

01: Pre test to assess the level of knowledge regarding gratification habit among parents in selected village of Mahesana district

X: Health teaching regarding gratification habit.

02: Post test to assess the effectiveness of the structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding gratification habit among parents in selected village of Mahesana district.

Setting of the study

The setting for this study is the selected village of Mahesana district. Those include Bhandu, Choti dhau.

Population:

The population selected for the study was comprises the parents in selected slum areas.

Sample:

The sample selected for the present study comprised of parents in Bhandu, Choti dhau, Mehsana.

Sample Size:

In this study, sample size consists of 30 parents in Bhandu, Choti dhau, Mehsana.

Sampling Technique:

A Non probability purposive sampling technique is used for this study.

Criteria FOR Sample Selection:

The sample was selected based on the following criteria:

Inclusion Criteria:

·       Parents who are living in village and willingly to participate in the study.

·       Parents, who are able to read, write and speak in Gujarati.

Exclusion Criteria:

Description of the Tool:

Section I: It consisted of demographic data including sex, age, religion, occupation, education, monthly family income, types of family and previous knowledge.

Section II: It consists of total 18 items.

Semi structured questionnaire is prepared to assess the knowledge regarding gratification.

Maximum score is 18. The answers are graded into 3 categories.

0-07 = Poor, 08-12= Average, 13-18= Good

Reliability:

For knowledge, reliability was assessed using test-retest method. The Pearson’s correlation coefficient method, and the score obtained was 0.85.

Method of Data Collection:

Data collection was done with the given period of three weeks. A written permission was obtained from authorities of the selected village of Mehsana. Actual data collection was done on 30 parents who have children.

STEP 1 (Pre test): The investigator had done pre test of knowledge by administering a Semi structured questionnaire

STEP 2 (Health teaching): Health teaching was given to the subjects regarding gratification habit.

STEP 3 (Post-test): Subjects were reassessed on 7th day. On the 7th day post test was taken.

Data analysis:

The data analysis was planned to include descriptive and inferential statistics.

RESULTS:

The collected data were organized, tabulated, analyzed and interpreted by means of statistical tables and figures, on the basis of objectives and the hypotheses formulated for the study.

Bar graph shows that in pre-test, 23.33% poor knowledge (score 0-7), 76.66% average knowledge (Score 8-12-5) and 0.0% good knowledge (Score 13-18) regarding gratification habit. In post-test, 0.0% poor knowledge (score 0-7), 6.66% average knowledge (Score 8-12-5) and 93.33% good knowledge (Score 13-18) regarding gratification habit. This indicates that the knowledge of parents regarding gratification habit improved remarkably after health teaching.

CONCLUSION:

The study findings revealed that there was a significant difference in pre test and post test knowledge score on gratification habit among parents and hence the hypothesis was rejected.

IMPLICATIONS OF THE STUDY:

The findings of the study reveal implications on nursing practice, nursing education and nursing research.

Nursing Practices:

1.     The study can be helpful to nurses to identify the clinical features of children’s.
